MATHILDA FRANCISCA KENNY, 1922-2014

mom 1981Mathilda Kenny, 91, of Arlington died November 19, 2014 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a brief illness.

Mathilda Francisca Maria Kenny, was born December 1, 1922 in New York City to Frances and Mathias Lorenz. The family moved to Vermont in 1934. She graduated from Arlington High School in 1940 and later moved to New York and worked during the war years for Interborough News Co. and later in defense for Arma Corporation as a machinist in a navy plant. She married John Kenny in 1946 in New York City then returned to Sandgate, Vermont in 1947 with her husband.

Mathilda served as a communicant at St. Margaret Mary's Church in Arlington and was president of the Sodality for three terms and a member of the church choir for 30 years. She was one of the founding members of the Arlington Chorale, and served as president for 2 terms, sang with the chorale for 40 years and was the Chorale librarian for 39 years.

She served as president of the Arlington Garden Club and was a member for over 27 years. She volunteered for the Arlington Food Shelf, senior meals at Bailey Hall and the Red Cross blood drives. She was the Coordinator of Senior Programs for the Council on Aging at Burdett Commons, and was a gray lady at Southwestern Medical Center for 22 years.

She served on the Sandgate School Board for 20 years, 18 years as Chairman; selectman for five years and as Auditor and Justice of the Peace. She operated the Evergreen Inn from 1949 until 1997, when she retired and moved to Arlington.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Kenny of Sandgate, VT and son, Stephen Kenny of Arlington, VT as well as extended family in Cleveland, California, Germany, Buenos Aires, Argentina and Chile. She was predeceased by husband, John Kenny in 1982.
