Associated Press - January 12, 2011
WATERBURY, VT (AP) - The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife is asking people to report any unusual bat activity this winter.
It's part of an effort to study the spread of so-called white nose syndrome, which has decimated bat populations in the northeastern United States.
Biologists say that bats afflicted with the syndrome may awaken from hibernation and leave the caves and mines where they spend the winter, apparently in search of food.
Last year, citizen reports of dying bats helped track the spread of the condition north to the Canadian border.
Bat sightings can be reported on the Fish and Wildlife website or by calling the department at 802-786-0055.
December 2011 "a ray of hope"
The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife announced that of the 15 bat colonies known in the western part of the state, many are doing better than expected. The Department hopes to enlist Vermonters
in 2012 to help identify bat colonies.
